What makes a K-pop fan event fill up? A view from KpopTracker
Concert weekends, big comebacks and the visibility problem small hosts face.
The question
K-Pop Tracker lists hundreds of fan-run cupsleeves and random play dances. From what hosts tell you, what separates a fan event that fills up from one that flops: venue, freebies, timing, or promotion?
From what I’ve seen, fan events tend to attract the biggest crowds when they happen around major concerts. Fans travel in from other cities and often make a whole weekend of it, attending several fan events alongside the concert. Groups returning after a long hiatus can also generate a lot of excitement, especially when they have a large, established fanbase. The recent BIGBANG concerts are a good example. For events with a lower turnout, I suspect visibility can be a big factor. Hosts often rely mainly on Instagram, and with a smaller following it can be difficult to reach beyond their existing audience. That’s one of the reasons I created KpopTracker: to help fans discover events from smaller organisers too, without needing to already follow them.
